Old Crib to Kid's Bench Remake

Here are the old crib pieces we got from another of my dad's auctions for a couple bucks. As you can see, my hubby has already started making the bench seat to go with them.
We have two long sides of the old crib, so he cut one down to 4 feet and started building the rest of the bench.

The crib piece took a lot of sanding. He wanted to make one bench out of oak so that we could stain it, and it would be strong and sturdy. With the other crib side, he will use pine, and we can just paint the whole piece once it's together. And, I don't think he wants to sand each little spindle again by hand. But he did a great job! I love him!
Here is the bench all put together, just needing a little sanding and stain.
And my husband wanted me to take a picture of his aftermath. He says THIS is what it takes to make something nice for your wife. So in translation: Don't complain about all the tools I have or buy, because this is what it takes to build you the things you want!

I don't think I was ever one to complain anyways. He doesn't say much when I get my crafting stuff strung out...or come home with sacks of stuff from Michaels... so I always try to keep that in mind when he says he "needs" a new tool. (As long as he keeps building me fun stuff!)
I love it! Now.... where to put it?

Bedroom set Makeover

We brought back an old bedroom set from my in-laws when we moved to VA. It was my husbands bedroom set growing up. We decided to give it a little makeover for our 'tween' daughter. Here is what the dresser looks like now... the before, if you will. It has yet to be made over.
Here is the painting process...

For starters, we sanded and painted the bedside table a glossy black. Then we got some fun silver hardware.
Here is a lamp I got for $0.50 at a yard sale back in Hawaii...I painted it the same glossy black, and covered a lampshade in fuzzy zebra print paper.
Not bad for $2.50... I just need to find some fun black fringe to put along the bottom.

Here is the bed all painted and put back together! We are waiting for her comforter set (on backorder) I love how it looks! Frankly, I'm quite impressed... it looks like a brand new bedroom set!

Old Bassinet Upcycle

When we were home this past fall, we got a few 'treasures' at my dad's auctions. We got an old bassinet, similar to the one pictured to the left (I forgot to take a before picture).

My husband took the ends and one long side piece and made it into a storage bench for the kids' winter gloves, hats, scarves, etc.

I painted it up yesterday and this morning, the kids helped put the winter apparel in their new home! I love it! Now I just need to add some flare to the new green shelf I put up above it!
Today, since we have so much snow, and more in the forecast.... hubby doesn't have to go to work AGAIN today. So, we have another old crib we are going to make into a couple benches. I'll try to take more pictures of the process for you to see. So, check back in a couple days to see that transformation!

Upcycle Before & After

I got this jar set for $0.50 at a yard sale...
BEFORE
AFTER

I painted the tray white and the lids red with black polka dots. Then glued black ribbon around the jars and filled them with her hairbands and clips. Before, they were just dumped in one of the bathroom drawers!
Even though my little girl shares a room with Daddy's office, I WILL give her a ladybug room after our next move.

Saturday Yard Sale Finds

I loaded up the kiddos this morning and headed to the base to find some treasures. Then we went out in town and found some more! Here is what we came home with:
Park Bench $5

Spoon Rack $2 - Ugly Cabinet $1

Set of 6 Placemats $0.50 - Jar set? $0.50

Orange Wicker Chair $FREE$ on the curb

My 11 y.o. daughter wanted to take this project on herself, so she found some white spray paint in the garage and started in as soon as we got home. There wasn't much paint left, so it didn't get much further than what you see below. I need to go get her another can o' paint! Then we need to come up with a cushion, but I think it will really turn out cute!

She and I also started in on those little wooden placemats, but I'll post those results when they are all done!

More Thrift Finds & A Few Results...

As I had guessed, the prices were MUCH cheaper at the thrift shop on the base today! I got the table, and all its contents on top for under $5! The table was only $2, the matching frames were $0.50 each, the 4 napkin rings were $0.25 as well as the metal hangar thingy...

The tall narrow shelf was $15 off Craigslist.

And remember this set of bronzed beauties????

I painted them black, and lit some floating candles in them.
The candles were a set of 6 that I got today for $0.25!

And remember this ugly wood block candle holder???I removed the wood 'art' and replaced it with a small beveled mirror I got at Ben Franklin for less than $2
SCORE!

Thrift Store Finds...

I've seen lots of 'reinvented' blog posts lately, and it motivated me to head over to the local Salvation Army Thrift Store to see what treasures I could find.

First off, I was really wanting to find a cute little table or desk to dress up, but I was extremely disappointed at the outrageous prices they were asking for some of the furniture!!!! Granted, I live in Hawaii, but who would pay $150 for a used particle board dresser??? I wouldn't pay that brand new?! And cute little end tables for $30-$60? Maybe that wasn't so bad, but I was looking for something a lot cheaper than that I guess.

So, I headed to the home decor area and picked up a few 'treasures' that I still thought were a dollar or two overpriced. For as much stuff as this place gets donated to them, you'd think they would lower their prices to keep it moving!!!

Okay, sorry for the ranting and raving... here are my finds. Stay tuned for their makeovers!
Tomorrow I'm headed to the thrift shop on the base where I know the prices will be lower!
Then this weekend.... I'm hitting up the yard sales!
